Honoring their legacy. Continuing their work.

Housed in the former home of Thaddeus Stevens and Lydia Hamilton Smith, the Center will be a state-of-the-art museum on the lives and legacies of Stevens, Smith, and their network of abolitionists. Exhibits developed in partnership with world-renowned museum planners Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA) will examine issues of slavery, freedom, and the continued fight for equality in the United States.

Many words, one wordmark
The Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy. It’s a lot to fit in a logo. We wanted to create a mark that didn’t downplay any one part, but also gave a sense of hierarchy. We chose to highlight the ampersand (all other words being equal) and made shorthand versions to offer branding flexibility over time.

Capturing a movement
To make the Stevens & Smith Center possible, LancasterHistory set out to capture donor support with a fundraising campaign. We designed and wrote a range of branded materials to help them pitch the project.

A reintroduction that’s long overdue
Stevens and Smith deserve to be local heroes. But most people from Lancaster have no idea who they were or why they matter. Getting locals excited about these figures will be key to the success of the museum—and we’ve laid the groundwork with a custom website, signage, and public displays. And that’s just phase one.
